New York Fashion Week in a Nutshell

In both February and September, there is one week where New York City is overflowing with designers, models, and celebrities. These two weeks of the year are when all of the world’s renowned fashion designers display their latest collection. The audience at each show consists of potential buyers, the general public, and the press. 78 designers participated in the 2017 Spring New York Fashion Week including Betsey Johnson, Ralph Lauren, and Vera Wang. Considering the large amount of designers, there is a high demand for models. Many of the Victoria’s Secret models also belong to modeling agencies who contract them to walk in Fashion Weeks all over the world. The 2017 Fashion week started Thursday, February 9, and ended Thursday, February 16.
For example, Victoria’s Secret model, Taylor Hill, walked in both Michael Kors and Tory Burch Fashion shows.
This fashion show was Hill’s sixth time modeling for Michael Kors since she first became a model.
Hill was first discovered when she was only 14, while she lived in Colorado.
Also the two Hadid sisters, Gigi and Bella, who are also Victoria’s Secret models, walked together in the Versace Fashion show.
Gigi Hadid first modeled when she was only two years old with Baby Guess, but then quit to live a normal childhood.
Gigi’s little sister Bella, is also a model. Bella recently won Model of the Year; Industry Choice, alongside other model Kendall Jenner.
Two other angels, and best friends, Jasmine Tookes and Josephine Skriver, walked together at Praba Gurung’s fashion show in New York before heading off to London, for London fashion week.
Tookes was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California, but she is of African, Brazilian, European, and West Indian descent.
As a child, Skriver, used to be an amazing soccer player until she was approached at a soccer tournament in New York and was asked to consider modeling.
However there are many models who walked fashion week who still have normal day jobs as they have not yet reached superstar status. For example, model Ya Bi, while being able to model also works at the restaurant Rue 57 as a hostess.
High end fashion designers launch their new lines for the spring and summer by putting on a fashion show, and Bi walked in three this year.
This past fashion week Bi walked in the Namilia fashion show, Christiano Siriano fashion show, and stood in the Laurence and Chico presentation.
Namilia is known for her skin bearing sense of style. She truly believes in women empowerment.
A fun fact about being a Namilia employee is that there is no office dress code. The employees are encouraged to dress comfortably, not stylishly.
Canadian duo, Laurence Li and Chico Wang are design partners who both attended Parsons together.
After New York Fashion Week, many of the models and designers will travel to London fashion week to model more lines again for the European market. After London, the models and designers do the same in Milan and Paris.
