The topic of why people like or dislike cilantro has become a very controversial topic.

Cilantro, also known as coriander or Chinese parsley, is an herb used commonly in cooking in foods such as guacamole or used as a garnish on top of foods such as chicken. Although the entire cilantro plant is edible it is more commonly used with just the leaves or seeds.

Many people disagree on what cilantro tastes like. While many people love it and eat it on everything, others believe it tastes like soap and hate it. Many people who like cilantro compare its taste  to other things like parsley or green onion leaves.

According to an article by The Huffington Post , the reason cilantro tastes like soap to some people has to do with their genes. In an episode of SciShow with Hank Green, Green discusses the reason genetics play a part in a person’s taste or distaste for cilantro. People who said they don’t like cilantro had similarities in a cluster of smell receptor genes that detected the smell of soap. They all tended to share one gene in particular which picks up the smell of cilantro as having a soapy smell.

Many people at the Academy have differing opinions on the use of cilantro in their food.

Team Cilantro:

Junior Mia Torres shares, “I love cilantro. It adds a unique taste unlike any other herb.  It’s really good in omelets and guacamole.”

Team Anti-Cilantro:

History teacher Lori Kearney says, “Cilantro is a weed, I don’t need a weed in my food. Leave the cilantro out of food, it’s not needed. It’s terrible. Sage needs to stop putting it in their food. I blame my parents for enough, I don’t need to add not liking cilantro to the list.”

“I joined an anti-cilantro newsletter. I have on many occasions come close to buying a t-shirt that says ‘cilantro ruins everything’.”shares senior Liz Benjamin.
