The hallway outside my dorm room was cold and drafty. I held my arms close to my chest for warmth as I paced around. Natasha was on to me, I could sense that, and I knew what my dad would say if I told him. He’d say that I’d brought this upon myself because I was so irresponsible. My dad… An idea popped into my head. My dad would know just how to solve this. Dad knows everything and anything there is to know about the legend! He would be disappointed because I had misused it… but we could get to that later! I hastily pulled my phone from my back pocket and dialed his number. I waited with earnest for the ringing to cease.

“Dad? Hey dad, it’s me.”

“Hammykins?”I could hear the concern in his voice. “Is everything alright?” He asked.

“Yeah, everything is fine… dad you know I don’t like that nickname. Do you have a minute?”

“Sure, whats up?”

“I need your advice…” I said hesitantly, “It’s about the-”

“It’s not missing is it?”

“No… dad….”

“Did anyone find out about it?” The tension in his voice heightened.

“Not exactly… dad… listen…”

“You know what would happen if word of the legend got out.”

I let out a groan in frustration. I should’ve anticipated that he would react like this.

“Yes, dad, I am fully aware of what would happen if word of the legend got out. Now, will you just listen to me for a second.”

There was silence on his end of the phone.

“Alright. Dad, don’t get mad, but I may or may not have created a printer that can do my homework-”

“LYDIA ROSE-”

“Dad, please. This printer can totally pass off as a normal printer, but I think Natasha might be a teensy bit on to me about it. I was wondering if you could give me advice on how to deal with this.”

I could hear him groan on the other end of the line. A long moment of silence passed before he gave me an answer.

“Look, Lydia dear, you’re sort of an adult now so I’ll spare you the lecture on cheating and just skip to some pointers. First, erase that printer from the book, throw it away, do whatever you have to to get rid of it. I’ll get you a printer, don’t worry about it. Second, look into getting a new roommate. I know you like Natasha but this is for the best-”

“But dad,” I protested, “I’m only a freshman I’m not even through my first year of college. I can’t switch my roommate.”

“Fine, you have a point. Maybe it’s best if you give me back the legend for the time being. I’ll see you in a few days for thanksgiving, right?”

I bit my lip. “Yeah, yeah I will be.”

“Does this help? You think you will have everything under control?”

“Yeah, dad, thank you.”

“No problem, Hammy. Love you. Call me if you need any more help.”

“Thanks dad. Love you too.”

I pulled my phone from my ear and hung up. With a deep breath, I worked up the courage to re-enter my dorm.

I was unaware that Natasha had been skimming through the legend while I was outside and I didn’t find out until it was too late.
