On Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, students and faculty participated in Academy’s first game of “Family Feud during convocation. Grouped (at random) into teams of five, grades competed in five rounds in order to play a final game against five faculty members, including English teacher, Virginia Pendleton, Math teacher, Jessica Lamm, Science teacher, Judy Perrella, Spanish teacher, Darlene Lanfranconi, and Religion teacher, Jamie Meyer.

In order to prepare answers for the event, students were emailed a survey with responses to questions such as, “Name something you’d find in an Academy girl’s backpack?” Student responses then became answers for each question during the game.

“The family feud convocation was really fun. Going into it, none of us had any idea what we were going to end up doing. It was definitely a fun surprise,” said Lindsay Ayers (‘19).

History teacher, Lori Kearney, was the driving force behind the idea for the school-wide game. Preceding the event, Achona had the chance to chat with Kearney about her creation of the event.

Achona: Where did you get the idea to do family feud?

Kearney: “It came to me in a dream. I have to thank Deborah Collins, however, because she was the one who brought my idea to life through creating the technology for the event”

A: Why did you want to do it?

K: “In the 1980’s, they came out with the board game called “Family Feud”. My family loved to play it, and I had such fond memories of it that I wanted to do something like that here.”

K: “I think that the students had a lot of fun. However, I feel like students could be more lighthearted during activities like this enjoy it for what it is.”

A: What are you goals for convocation this year?

K: “The goal for convocation this year is for it to be a time for us to celebrate and be together. It is a time for reflection, and should give us a sense of community.
